Program Overview

The Early Childhood Education program prepares teachers to work in a variety of educational settings with young children, including Kindergarten-3rd grade classrooms in the public schools (K-3 Utah Teaching License). Program courses emphasize theories of child development and how those theories can be operationalized in instruction that supports young children's development in all domains (social, emotional, physical, cognitive).


  1. Declare the Early Childhood Education Pre-Major. See a program advisor in the Education Advisement Center (EAC)
  2. Attend a program orientation meeting - pick up a flyer in 350 MCKB, or check the student calendar
  3. Complete 2 courses:
    • SFL 210 - Human Development
    • ECE 202 - Foundations of Child Development
  4. Review GPA and ACT/SAT scores with a program advisor

How to Apply

  • Register for a free account on the Educator application system
  • Start an Early Childhood Education program application
  • Complete the admissions checklist in the application
  • Apply for fingerprinting and FBI background check. Allow from 1-3 weeks for the fingerprints to be processed. FBI background clearance is valid for 3 years
  • Complete a graduation plan with a program advisor in the Education Advisement Center, 350 MCKB

  • 79 credits
  • No grade lower than a C in any program course
  • 14-week student teaching OR full year paid internship
  • Praxis II exam
  • Application for licensure with the Utah State Board of Education
